‘No Kings” protest criticized for wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars

Americans across the nation saw sporadic protests. Now we’re getting a glimpse into the money behind the scenes.

Now a ‘No Kings” protest was criticized for wasting hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Scale and Production Behind the ‘No Kings’ Protest in St. Paul

The “No Kings” rally held on March 28, 2026, at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul served as the national flagship event in a series of coordinated demonstrations across the U.S. and abroad.

Organizers described the gatherings as pro-democracy mobilizations opposing certain Trump administration policies, particularly on immigration enforcement. The St. Paul event featured high-profile performers and speakers including Bruce Springsteen, Jane Fonda, Joan Baez, and others, drawing tens of thousands of participants according to various estimates.

Professional Logistics and $250,000 Infrastructure

A detailed review of the event’s behind-the-scenes operations reveals a sophisticated production setup estimated at around $250,000, involving approximately 30 semi-trucks and nine vendors.

The infrastructure included a 40-foot mobile stage equipped with ballistic bullet-resistant glass, a sound system with about 100 speakers, extensive lighting, nearly a mile of electrical cable, eight jumbo video screens, high-speed internet, bike-rack barriers, tents, folding chairs, around 300 porta-potties, generators, and other support elements.

Production manager Matt Svobodny from Slamhammer Sound & Roadcase Co., one of the main vendors, explained the requirements: “You need a platform for people to stand on and a way for people to be seen and heard in order to reach everybody. And, in order to do that, you need professionals that know what they’re doing and are going to do it also safe for all the people…. So you can’t just have people with good intentions and no idea what they’re doing.”

He added that the setup had “all the elements and infrastructure of a music festival,” comparable in scale to a Def Leppard concert.

Roger Fisk, a former Obama and Biden administration strategist serving as senior advisor, described the complexity: “satellite trucks, cable runs, ballistic glass, road closures, most of the bike rack [sic] in North America, risk monitoring and threat analysis, bridge construction, Springsteen, a kaleidoscope of law enforcement, and staffs of elected officials, security details, and other celebrities that require specific care and respect. The final week was 4 am to 9-10-11 pm….”

Fisk emphasized earned media as a key metric and noted the development of “the art and science of these massive pro-democracy public engagements.”

Funding, Organizers, and Broader Context

Indivisible Twin Cities and the No Kings Coalition played central roles in organization, with Indivisible listed as the primary funder for much of the production.

The broader network involves hundreds of activist groups with substantial combined revenues. Some participating organizations have ties to major donors, including those linked to progressive philanthropies and others associated with left-leaning or socialist causes.

The event occurred amid ongoing debates over Trump administration actions, with demonstrators expressing opposition through signs and rhetoric critical of federal policies.

Organizers framed the protests as resistance to perceived overreach, while the professional execution and funding sources have prompted questions about the grassroots nature of such mobilizations.

Expert Nancy Snow, author of “Propaganda and Persuasion,” commented on the dynamics: “We are in an age of cognitive warfare, in which there is a competition to shape how people think, and it’s always important to follow the money because it tells you who is setting the agenda and amplifying the message.”

She added that “Following the money doesn’t automatically invalidate the grievances of citizens who show up for a protest. Both things can be true at once,” and stressed that “sunshine is the best disinfectant” regarding transparency in logistics and funding.
