Trump is doing what he believes is in the best interest for America. But there are some risks at play.
And President Trump is deploying troops to a dangerous location in a stunning twist.
Trump Administration Set to Launch Major Immigration Operation in Chicago
The Trump administration is preparing an immigration enforcement operation in Chicago, with plans to deploy over 200 Homeland Security officers to the city. The operation, expected to kick off in September, will utilize Naval Station Great Lakes, located near Chicago, as a central hub for logistical support, per the New York Times.
Tom Homan, President Trump’s appointed Border Czar, outlined the administration’s focus on intensifying enforcement in sanctuary cities like Chicago.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Homan said, “Look at the crime rate in Chicago. Operations will ramp up across the country, you’re going to see a ramp up of operations in Chicago, absolutely, you’re going to see a ramp up of operations in New York, you’re going to see a ramp up of operations continue in LA, and Portland, Seattle.”
He stressed the targeting of cities that limit cooperation with ICE, stating, “All these sanctuary cities that refuse to work with ICE, where we know public safety threats are being released every day into this country, especially those cities. We’re gonna address that.”
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, a Democrat, has fiercely opposed the planned operation, drawing parallels to previous federal actions.
“This plan seems to be a rerun of their tactics in Los Angeles, where ICE agents were used as a pretext to justify further escalation by federal agents and National Guard troops,” Johnson stated.
“We reject any attempts that put Chicagoans in danger as a means of furthering the president’s political ends.”
This move comes on the heels of a recent deployment of DHS officers and National Guard troops to Washington, DC, to tackle crime and immigration issues. President Trump signaled Chicago as a priority, stating it would be “next” on the list.
A senior DHS official said to the New York Post, “President Trump has been clear: we are going to make our streets and cities safe again. Across the country, DHS law enforcement are arresting and removing the worst of worst including gang members, m*rderers, p*dophiles, and r*pists that have terrorized American communities.”
The official added, “Under Secretary Noem, ICE and CBP are working overtime to deliver on the American people’s mandate to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens and make America safe again.”
Per the New York Times, the operation’s logistics hinge on approval from the Pentagon for the use of Naval Station Great Lakes. The request, still under review by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, outlines a 30-day operation in the Chicago metropolitan area.
If approved, the base would support up to 250 DHS personnel, providing facilities for a “Tactical Operations Center” and an “Incident Command Post,” along with essentials like bathrooms, laundry, parking for cars, and medical supply and non-lethal weapon storage, per the New York Times.
According to the New York Times, the naval base, primarily a training ground for new recruits, would serve as a critical staging point for the operation, set to begin on September 2 with the arrival of advance DHS teams.
