Top Democrat is under fire after breaking ranks to join forces with Trump

The divide between Republicans and Democrats has never been wider. But still there are some who bridge the gap.

Now a top Democrat is under fire after breaking ranks to join forces with Trump.

Trump Delivers on Promise with Swift Action Against DC Crime

In a display of decisive leadership, President Donald Trump has mobilized federal resources to bolster safety in the nation’s capital, with DC Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith expressing eagerness to “work together” on implementing his directive to federalize her 3,400-officer force.

This comes just hours after 850 federal agents hit the streets Monday night, marking a strong start to Trump’s vow to transform Washington into the safest and most beautiful city on Earth.

Smith and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, a Democrat, met Tuesday morning at the Justice Department with new overseers, including DEA chief Terry Cole, who will supervise the MPD. Bowser told reporters she aimed to explore “how to make the most of the additional officer support,” as the White House surges personnel from agencies like Border Patrol, FBI, DEA, and US Park Police.

National Guard troops will also patrol, enhancing visibility even without arrest powers.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt updated reporters Tuesday afternoon: “last night, approximately 850 officers and agents were surged across the city,” resulting in “they made a total of 23 arrests.”

She detailed: “These arrests consisted of homicide, firearms offenses, possession with intent to distribute narcotics, fare evasion, lewd acts, stalking, possession of a high-capacity magazine, fleeing to elude in a vehicle, no permits, driving under the influence, reckless driving and a bench warrant.” Leavitt highlighted the seizure of “six illegal handguns” and affirmed, “this is only the beginning.”

Federal Surge Yields Immediate Results Under Trump’s Vision

Leavitt pledged ongoing intensity: “Over the course of the next month, the Trump administration will relentlessly pursue and arrest every violent criminal in the district who breaks the law, undermines public safety and endangers law-abiding Americans.”

She echoed Trump’s campaign promise: “He is going to make our nation’s capital the most beautiful and safe city on Earth, just like he promised on the campaign trail.”

Despite past tensions with Trump over policing during his first term, Bowser now focuses on effective deployment: “We have more police, and we want to make sure we use them,” ensuring National Guard and federal agents are “being well used … to drive down crime.”

Smith, optimistic post-meeting with Cole, stated outside the Justice Department: “I think this is going to be a good effort.” She emphasized federal aid in removing “illegal guns” from streets and addressing “pockets of crime we would like to address,” adding, “We are here to work together with our federal partners.”

Trump’s Monday move to federalize the MPD, enabled for up to 30 days under the 1973 Home Rule Act, showcases his commitment to law and order amid limited DC self-governance. Extension beyond a month requires congressional approval, providing a framework for sustained improvements.

Trump’s Bold Move Exposes Flaws in Local Crime Reporting

In announcing the federalization, Trump referenced recent high-profile crimes and dismissed Bowser’s claims of violent crime at 30-year lows, citing a scandal last month where MPD leaders allegedly pressured commanders to falsify data.

This initiative not only addresses immediate threats but also restores trust in accurate reporting, aligning with Trump’s track record of fulfilling promises to protect Americans and revitalize the capital under strong, unified leadership.
