The war in Ukraine is the worst Europe has seen since World War II. It needs to end.
And now Ukraine’s Zelenskyy is set to huddle with Trump at Mar-a-Lago immediately.
Hopeful Step Toward Ending the Ukraine War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced plans for a high-level meeting with President Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday, focusing on advancing negotiations to halt the devastating four-year conflict with Russia that has claimed countless lives and displaced millions.
Zelenskyy shared the development on social media, emphasizing urgency in pursuing peace.
“We are not losing a single day. We have agreed on a meeting at the highest level — with President Trump in the near future.”
He later told reporters the Sunday talks would cover an “economic agreement,” security guarantees for Ukraine, and sensitive “territorial issues,” noting that the 20-point peace plan “is about 90% ready.”
Zelenskyy also stressed the importance of broader involvement.
“We must, without doubt, find some format in the near future in which not only Ukraine and the U.S. are present, but Europe is represented as well,” he said.
Recent Diplomatic Momentum Builds Optimism
The upcoming encounter follows what Zelenskyy described as productive discussions.
“We are truly working 24/7 to bring closer the end of this brutal Russian war against Ukraine and to ensure that all documents and steps are realistic, effective, and reliable,” Mr. Zelenskyy posted. “We discussed certain substantive details of the ongoing work. There are good ideas that can work toward a shared outcome and the lasting peace. Real security, real recovery, and real peace are what all of us need — Ukraine, the United States, Europe, and every partner who helps us.”
These exchanges included a “very good conversation” with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed ongoing contacts, stating, “It was agreed upon to continue the dialogue.”
Trump’s Cautious Approach Prioritizes Sustainable Peace
President Trump has consistently advocated for resolving the prolonged war, though progress has faced obstacles throughout the year.
In late November, he noted “tremendous progress” but set clear conditions for direct involvement.
“I look forward to hopefully meeting with President Zelenskyy and President Vladimir Putin soon, but ONLY when the deal to end this War is FINAL or, in its final stages,” he said on social media.
