Leavitt Defends Trump’s Supporters Against Crockett’s Claims
On June 19, 2025, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt sharply rebuked Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) during a briefing, responding to the congresswoman’s claim that President Donald Trump’s supporters are “mentally ill.”
Prompted by a question from The Daily Wire’s Mary Margaret Olohan, Leavitt called Crockett’s remarks “incredibly derogatory” for targeting the nearly 80 million Americans who voted for Trump in 2024, per CNN exit polls.
“I think it’s incredibly derogatory to accuse nearly 80 million Americans of mental illness. Last time I checked, Jasmine Crockett couldn’t dream of winning such a majority of the public as President Trump did,” Leavitt said.
She highlighted the diverse makeup of Trump’s base, including “hard-working patriots, forgotten men and women, business owners, law enforcement officers, nurses, and teachers,” emphasizing their role in the America First movement.
Leavitt’s defense aligns with Trump’s strong public support, bolstered by achievements like the zero illegal immigrant releases in May 2025, as reported by The Post.
Crockett’s Comments Spark Controversy
Crockett’s statements, made on Katie Couric’s “Next Question” podcast on June 16, 2025, labeled Trump’s widespread support as evidence of a “mental health crisis” in the U.S. She argued, “We’ve got a mental health crisis in this country because everyone — no matter how you affiliate yourself — should be against Trump. Period.”
Expressing a preference for “any regular Republican” like George Bush, Crockett called for bipartisan opposition to Trump, saying, “I don’t know how far he has to go before we can come together and just say, ‘Enough is enough.’”
Her remarks, covered by Breitbart on June 17, drew criticism for dismissing the millions who back Trump’s policies, such as the 95% drop in border “gotaways” reported by CBP in February 2025. Leavitt’s retort underscored the disconnect, inviting Crockett to “go to a Trump call sometime and she can see it for herself.”
Trump’s Broad Appeal Shines Through
Leavitt’s response highlighted the strength and diversity of Trump’s coalition, which powered his 2024 victory with 53% of the popular vote, including gains among Latinos and Black voters, per AP election data.
“The America First movement, which President Trump has built, is filled with hard-working patriots … from middle America, as we all know, from where you all grew up outside of this beltway,” she said.
This reflects Trump’s success in addressing voter priorities, like the 1.7% blue-collar wage increase in his first five months, per June 2025 Treasury data.
Leavitt’s playful jab—“I hope that she continues to be a rising star, for the Republican Party at least”—suggested Crockett’s rhetoric may alienate moderates, boosting Trump’s appeal.
