Republican legislator unveils battle with a serious illness

Now is not the time for partisan politics. This is certainly concerning news.

Because a republican legislator unveiled a battle with a serious illness.

In a striking moment on the House floor, Rep. Tom Kean Jr. of New Jersey stepped forward Tuesday to confront months of mystery surrounding his absence from Capitol Hill.

The Republican lawmaker finally pulled back the curtain on a serious health struggle that sidelined him for almost four months, revealing it as a fierce bout with depression.

Kean’s return came at a critical time for House Republicans, who have been grinding through a narrow majority and tough legislative fights.

The congressman did not sugarcoat the reality of his condition. “Many people think it is feeling sad. It is so much more than that,” Kean stated.

“It is physical, it is emotional, and until you experience it yourself, it is difficult to fully understand how powerful this illness can be.”

He described going to the hospital for testing, only to receive the depression diagnosis.

Doctors pushed for extended inpatient care as the fastest route to getting back on his feet.

“I was hesitant,” Kean stated. “I didn’t think I had time for it.”

Kean admitted that early assurances to his constituents about a quick return were made in good faith. Yet the recovery process proved far more demanding.

“But as the over 48 million of my fellow Americans being treated for this illness have come to discover, there is no timeline for healing,” he continued.

“Today I stand before you healthier, stronger and excited to return to the work that I love.”

Kean’s openness now sends a clear message about personal strength in the face of hardship.

“Asking for help is not a weakness,” the congressman stated. “It is a strength.”

In an age where Washington often feels detached from real life, Kean’s candor cuts through the usual political theater.
