It takes something big to surprise politicians. And this tops the list.
Because a sudden Congressional death leaves Capitol Hill completely shocked.
Danise Baird, the wife of U.S. Rep. Jim Baird (R-Ind.), has died from complications arising from serious injuries she sustained in a hit-and-run car crash on January 5, 2026. The congressman’s office announced her passing on Sunday, March 1, 2026, in a statement posted on X.
The incident occurred while Rep. Baird and his wife were driving back to Washington, D.C. Both were hospitalized following the crash, with Rep. Baird released after less than 24 hours and initially expected to recover fully, though he missed some time on Capitol Hill. Danise Baird suffered nearly 15 breaks and fractures.
Her son, Beau Baird, shared updates on Facebook: On January 15, he noted “a long recovery ahead of her after suffering nearly 15 breaks and fractures” in the “serious hit-and-run accident.” By February 1, he reported she had taken her first assisted steps, adding, “while we’re hopeful, we know there’s still a road ahead, and family is at the center of all we do.”
The Baird family has requested privacy during this time. The congressman’s office stated: “Congressman Baird and Danise were married for 59 years, building a life centered on faith, family, and service.
A devoted wife and loving mother of three, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed. We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.”
Tributes from Colleagues and Officials
Several Republican lawmakers offered condolences and expressed support for Rep. Baird and his family. Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) wrote: “This is incredibly sad news from our dedicated colleague Jim Baird.
Jim’s wife Danise was often by his side as he worked so hard in Congress on behalf of his constituents. They are salt of the earth people and Jim and his family have sacrificed so much for our country.”
Rep. Pete Stauber (R-Minn.) posted: “Please join me in lifting up my colleague Rep. Jim Baird and his family in prayer after the heartbreaking loss of his cherished wife, Danise. May God wrap them in His comfort through the difficult days ahead.”
Rep. Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) added that she and her husband were praying for the family to “find comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead.”
President Donald Trump commented shortly after the initial crash, noting that both were originally expected “to be okay” following what he described as a “pretty bad” accident.
Investigation Details Limited
The crash was characterized as a hit-and-run, with law enforcement actively investigating and searching for the responsible vehicle, according to family updates at the time. No further details on the suspect, vehicle, or current status of the investigation have been publicly released in connection with this announcement.
The Baird family has not provided additional comments on the circumstances beyond the initial reports.
