Joe Biden painted himself as the “devout” Catholic of the bunch. But now his Church is taking Trump’s side.
And the US Catholic Bishops handed Trump a major victory that is raising eyebrows.
A Welcome Surprise
The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) released a statement on Jan. 26 expressing deep gratitude for President Trump’s recent pro-life actions, including an executive order and memorandum designed to eliminate taxpayer-funded abortion.
“We gratefully applaud the decision to end taxpayer-funded abortion,” stated Bishop Daniel E. Thomas of Toledo, Ohio, who serves as chairman of the USCCB Committee for Pro-Life Activities.
Trump’s executive order reversed previous administration policies that paved the way for taxpayer dollars to fund abortion.
Additionally, the reinstatement and expansion of the Mexico City Policy now ensures that U.S. foreign aid will no longer support organizations that perform or promote abortion overseas.
“A significant majority of Americans oppose being forced to support abortion through their tax dollars,” Bishop Thomas emphasized.
“I am grateful for the strengthening of policies that protect us from being compelled to participate in a culture of death, and that help us to restore a culture of life at home and abroad.”
Ruling for the American People
The USCCB highlighted a recent poll commissioned by the Knights of Columbus, revealing that 57% of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion domestically, while 73% are against funding abortion abroad.
The bishops also celebrated the United States’ renewed commitment to the Geneva Consensus Declaration, an international agreement affirming women’s health, the right to life for the unborn, and the essential role of the family.
Trump had spearheaded this initiative during his first term, garnering signatures from over 30 nations before the Biden administration withdrew from it.
“It is important and encouraging to see the United States again taking leadership in affirming the right to life and the fundamental place of the family on the global stage where many pressures can be arrayed against these values,” said Bishop Thomas.
The bishops also praised Trump’s recent pardons of peaceful pro-life advocates imprisoned under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act.
“Pro-life Americans have a right to pray in public, to counsel women who are considering abortion, and to peacefully protest,” Bishop Thomas affirmed.
“We welcome support for men and women who are exercising these rights to witness to a culture of life, and, at the same time, we absolutely reject resorting to force or violence.”
These actions reflect Trump’s steadfast commitment to protecting the unborn and promoting a culture of life—values that resonate deeply with a majority of Americans and with the Catholic Church’s mission to defend life at every stage.
