A new survey shows a significant share of Americans see communism as a real and present danger inside the United States, arriving as President Donald Trump escalates his warnings about the ideology’s creeping influence within the Democratic Party ahead of the midterms.
Survey Finds Substantial Share Wary of Domestic Communist Threat
A recent weekly survey from the Economist/YouGov found that four in ten Americans view communists in the United States as posing a major or moderate threat. The poll was taken July 17–20, 2026, among 1,602 U.S. adult citizens, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3.3 percent.
A separate Cato Institute 2026 survey, conducted in collaboration with Morning Consult, found that a fifth of Americans hold a favorable view of communism overall, while opinions on socialism remain closely split between favorable and unfavorable. Gen Z stood out in that survey as the only age group viewing socialism more favorably than capitalism.
Trump Warns of Communist “Menace” as Democrats Drift Left
President Trump has made clear throughout his administration that the U.S. stands against the infiltration of communism, even as Democrats see their party slowly being taken over by radical socialists.
“Our warriors did not fight communism on battlefields across the world, only to have that menace rear its ugly head right back here in America,” Trump said during an Independence Day speech marking America’s semiquincentennial. “We’re not going to let it happen.”
Speaking to Breitbart News in an exclusive Oval Office interview, Trump warned that the Democratic Party’s hard turn left poses a genuine danger to the country.
“You would think that they couldn’t go anywhere, you would think that the American public is much wiser than that — and if you look back on history, it’s never worked,” Trump said. “Go back 1,000 years, different names, but the concept of give away everything ends up in squalor, crime, and death.”
Rise of Self-Described Socialists Fuels the Debate
The president’s rhetoric comes as self-described democratic socialists have notched a string of primary wins in cities and congressional races across the country over the past year, fueling Republican arguments that the Democratic Party’s leftward drift is no longer a fringe phenomenon but an organized takeover attempt.
Polling on the broader ideological landscape remains mixed: while most Americans continue to hold favorable views of capitalism over socialism and communism, younger voters show markedly less resistance to left-wing economic systems than older generations, a generational split both parties are now moving aggressively to exploit heading into November’s midterm elections.
